View Full Version : Trials for Suspected Terrorists

The debate about the vehicle for prosecuting terrorists has been raging now for weeks. The seemingly trivial point Republicans are making is that military tribunals should be used, even though conviction rates are lower and far fewer. More concerning, it appears they are only using this as a political issue. As it turns out Bush handled identical issues identically. It was OK then for Republicans, but not now?
Republicans say they fear what terrorists might do if we prosecute in civilian courts, but they don't fear what they will do if terrorists are prosecuted in military courts? They object to giving the Christmas "underpants bomber" Miranda rights, but that is exactly what the Bush Administration did with Richars Reid, the shoe bomber. It seems the Republican are trying to politicize everything with hypocritical claims. Any thoughts?

Just a question. What is the Obama Administrations latest position on the trial of KSM and his four co-conspirators?

You address my short one sentance question with a question? Is that the best you can do?
But since you asked, I have read/heard so many things about the Obama Administration's position on the trials of KSM and his four co-conspirators, which seem to change almost daily, I am not sure I know what to think other than they do not seem to know what they are doing. But they do seem to admit their initial decision to try them in Federal Criminal Court in New York was wrong.
The last I heard is that they do not seem to be able to get the funding from Congress to close GITMO, an Obama campaign promise, and some "moderate" Republicans seem to be willing to bail them out buy trying to get the funding if the trial is held in a Military Tribunal.
Do you have anything to add?

Apparrantly not, I guess the DOJ is busy defending health care reform lawsiuts filed by a number of states, and sueing the State of Arizona over illegal immigration, etc. More evidence our own federal government seems more interested in fighting against the rights of its own citizens than terrorists, illegals, New Black Panthers voter intimidation, etc.:(
But to be fair I think the DOJ deserves credit for investigating and determining there was not sufficient evidence to file charges for the Bush-Era U.S. Attorney firings.
